Program Summary

Workplace stress remains persistently elevated. Mental health professionals, coaches, and providers are increasingly asked to help clients navigate it—often without any solid grounding in the underlying biology. 

Conducted by an expert in acute and chronic stress physiology, this dynamic training will equip human-centered practitioners with the neurobiology needed to understand stress and well-being as distinct physiological processes rather than opposite ends of a single spectrum. 

The one-day program will teach participants the core physiological mechanisms of stress: 

· The HPA axis and its role in acute and chronic stress responses; 

· Allostatic load and the physiological cost of prolonged stress activation; and

· Autonomic nervous system arousal, regulation, and interoception (the body's internal sensing system and its role in emotional awareness and self-regulation).

Heart rate variability (HRV) will receive particular attention: what HRV actually is, what it looks like physiologically, and what genuinely supports its healthy function. The training will encourage participants to move beyond vague references to "improving HRV" with general knowledge of generic techniques like breathing exercises or reflection prompts by equipping them with a working understanding of the mechanisms involved and the intervention techniques which evidence reveals most effective.

Finally, the program will introduce participants to the neurobiology of well-being in its own right. Participants will consider the biology of awe and flourishing and what it means to establish well-being as a distinct, physiological state (rather than the mere absence of stress). 

Throughout, the training will emphasize the skill of translating mechanism into practice: the means to recognize what is happening in a client's body; understanding of the limits of coaching vs. clinical intervention; and application of physiologically accurate, evidence-based language and strategies for the reduction of stress and the promotion of well-being.

Kymberlee O'Brien, MEd, PhD

 

Dr. Kymberlee O'Brien is a Psychophysiologist and Neuroscience Researcher (PhD, Social Psychology, with specializations in Neuroscience and Psychophysiology, Brandeis University) whose research examines the body's physiological response to acute and chronic stress. She trained at the Harvard Health and Psychophysiology Lab and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Developmental Psychobiology at UMass Boston, directing her own research labs for nearly 20 years studying stress reactivity, cortisol regulation, and heart rate variability under pressure. She is faculty at William James College, teaching the Neuroscience of Leadership, and Founder of NeuraLight Consulting—pioneering the biology beneath performance, before behavior, before thought.

Learning Objectives

After this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the physiological mechanisms of the HPA axis and autonomic nervous system in acute versus chronic stress response, including the role of allostatic load in prolonged stress activation;
  • Explain what heart rate variability (HRV) measures physiologically and identify at least two evidence-based interventions that meaningfully support HRV, distinguishing them from generic stress-reduction techniques such as breathing exercises alone;
  • Apply principles of stress physiology and interoception to differentiate between client support that falls within coaching or HR scope and situations that warrant referral to an emergency health professional; and
  • Describe the neurobiological basis of well-beingincluding the roles of positive affect, awe, and flourishing—as a physiological state distinct from the mere absence of stress.
