Picture This: How HIEs Are Expanding Image Exchange with Rural Health Transformation

Turning faster access to medical images into stronger care coordination and better outcomes for rural patients, powered by RHTP investment

For rural patients, timely access to medical images can shape everything from an emergency transfer to a specialist referral. Statewide image exchange makes that possible, giving clinicians the studies they need when and where they need them. The Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) now gives states and Health Information Exchanges a powerful opportunity to bring that capability to every rural community.

In this peer-led roundtable, HIE leaders from Iowa and New Mexico share how they are expanding image exchange to rural hospitals and clinics and aligning it with RHTP priorities. Panelists will discuss how image sharing supports faster emergency triage and transfers, smoother referrals, fewer repeat scans, and less time spent chasing CDs and outside records. They’ll share the early wins they are pursuing, how they are bringing rural providers on board, the partnerships making progress possible, and how they plan to measure impact for patients, providers, and the state.
