Workshop Description
This training will explore the unique challenges and considerations related to alcohol use among older adults, a population often overlooked in traditional substance use and mental health frameworks. Participants will learn how generational attitudes toward alcohol use can create a barrier to care and will identify factors that increase the risk for alcohol-related harms in the aging population. Emphasis will be placed on practical harm reduction strategies and communication approached to support clients in making safer choices, while promoting dignity and autonomy.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify high risk behaviors associated with alcohol use in older adults and recognize the unique physiological and psychosocial factors that increase their vulnerabilities.
- Assess older adults for signs and symptoms of alcohol use and develop methods to communicate treatment options.
- Utilize educational strategies to address ambivalence and enhance motivation for change.
