It was always envisioned that the guide would be a living document and that amendments and additional content would be incorporated as time went on. In 2023 a team of young engineers comprising of original and new authors assembled to embark on the development of the second edition of the ATS Tunnel Design Guideline.
The tunnelling and underground industry is evolving fast as governments and businesses strive to decarbonise, digitilise and deliver more sustainable projects for the future. Through a process of internal and external consultation, the team developed new chapters to be included in the second edition of the ATS Tunnel Design Guideline:
- Tunnel Spaceproofing and Geometry
- Groundwater and Hydrogeology in Tunnelling
- Fire and Life Safety
- Digital Engineering
- Durability
- Sustainability
In addition to the new chapters some amendments and refinements were made to the first edition content based on industry review and feedback.
Please note, the guideline is not intended to be a design standard or specification. The ATS recommend readers to look at the references, and carefully consider the choices that need to be made. There will be situations where there will need to be modification to the concepts presented.
The guideline is available as a PDF publication with 237 pages.
