COURSE OVERVIEW

This 3-Day course provides education in Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) focusing on the safe treatment of patients with upper aerodigestive benign & malignant disease. This course also provides basic system training in surgical robotics that focuses on basic skills required to safely operate the Intuitive Surgical da Vinci Surgical System. Participants will receive instruction in robotic system setup, instrumentation, patient positioning, docking, and troubleshooting, as well as hands-on laboratory training utilizing simulation, dry-lab exercises, and cadaveric models. Emphasis is placed on developing robotic psychomotor skills and performing TORS procedures, including radical tonsillectomy, base of tongue tumor resection, and supraglottic/epiglottic tumor resection.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• Translate the core robotic psychomotor skills that include EndoWrist manipulation, camera navigation, instrument clutching, tissue dissection, and energy application as they relate to the execution of these skills at the surgeon console of the robotic surgical platform.
• Recall and identify the general robotic platform components, settings, instrumentation, and safety features.
• Define the roles and responsibilities of each robotic surgical team member and demonstrate the proper setup, docking, and positioning of the robotic surgical platform.
• Identify appropriate patient candidates for Transoral Robotic Surgery based on oncologic indications, anatomy, and procedural considerations.
• Demonstrate the principles of surgical exposure, margin-oriented resection, and safe tissue handling during TORS procedures.
• On a cadaveric model, employ proper robotic surgical techniques for radical tonsillectomy, base of tongue tumor resection, and supraglottic/epiglottic tumor resection, utilizing Transoral Robotic Surgery techniques.
