COURSE OVERVIEW

Learning to read is a critical process for all students, and finding the best strategies to teach it can be a challenge. This course will look to research from the National Reading Panel and other literacy experts to strengthen your teaching practice and increase young students’ mastery of the key areas of reading-- Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension. You’ll explore tried and true teaching strategies that can support all tiers of the Response to Intervention (RTI) framework, including the unique needs of your English Learners. Build a strong foundation in teaching reading and reading development! 

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Identify and define the five essential components of effective reading instruction.
• Analyze your current reading instruction practices and identify areas for improvement.
• Create engaging lessons and activities that promote phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
• Implement research-based strategies and interventions to support struggling readers and differentiate instruction. 
• Reflect on professional growth and articulate how learning from this course focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension will impact students and the broader educational community.
