Manufacturing and performance assessment for advanced energy storage roadmapping

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have consistently been touted as a next-generation leap for battery energy
storage, promising to unlock next-level energy densities while improving battery safety. “SSBs,” however,
fall under a large umbrella of diverse technologies, each with distinctive roadmaps to realizing their promise.
While exuberant investment in the last decade has supported advances of many SSB technologies, commercial
maturity and impact have not yet been achieved.
In response to direction from Congress in HRPT 119-213 (page 106), DOE’s Office of Electricity has tasked
STEER to perform analyses that will inform a national strategy to advance SSB technologies, ensuring U.S.
leadership and competitiveness in the industry.
This invite-only workshop at Stanford University is the final opportunity for the SSB community to provide input
before that strategy report is complete. Participants will review STEER’s preliminary findings, pressure-test a
new decision-support tool, and share candid views on the barriers facing SSB technologies, all under
modified Chatham House Rule.
STEER’s invitation-only workshops are designed to convene small groups of industry executives and technical
leaders in one room to formulate the right questions to ask—and answer—all toward helping guide “what to
build, where to innovate, and how to invest.”
