A quiet cost the industry has absorbed for decades

Every year, the aviation industry quietly absorbs the cost of a moving target — Earth’s magnetic field. As magnetic north drifts, charts must be reissued, navigation databases updated, runway designators changed, and air traffic management systems recalibrated. These corrections happen continuously, inconsistently, and at significant cost across every segment of aviation.

The ICAO TRUE Advisory Group (TRUE-AG) is tackling this challenge head-on. Convened with international experts from ANSPs, regulators, manufacturers, and airspace users, the group has spent almost three years assessing the safety, economic, and operational feasibility of transitioning global aviation navigation from magnetic to true north reference.
