Workers' Compensation - Navigating the Process

The goal of the workers’ compensation system is to provide Indemnity and medical benefits to employees who have sustained a work-related injury or illness. The State of Texas regulates and defines the system. Laws and requirements are not always clear, which sometimes leads to confusion for employees, supervisors, and administrators. Communication is key to navigating the process.

This session answers the who, what, when, and how related to the Texas workers’ compensation system. The Risk Pool’s Workers’ Compensation staff wants to help with your understanding of the process.  Workers’ Compensation - Navigating the Process will assist you with achieving the best possible outcomes and being a more-informed resource for your entity and employees.

· Articulate reporting requirements

· Define steps of the claims process and review appropriate forms

· Review ‘red flags’ that could be cause for investigation and how claims investigation  works

· Explain workers’ compensation benefits

· Recognize the advantages and steps of a return-to-work program

· Utilize the Workers’ Compensation Alliance to achieve best possible outcomes for employees and employers

· Discuss situations such as secondary employment and presumption

· Discuss roles of injured employees, supervisors, physicians, entity workers’ compensation administrators, and adjusters

· Review TMLIRP resources to assist administrators in the workers’ compensation process
