COURSE OVERVIEW
According to the Pew Charitable Trust, 10-24 year olds make up 14% of all suicides—surpassing 6,500 deaths – making suicide the third leading cause of death for this age group. As adults who work with students, we can make a difference in their lives through our awareness of teen mental health, and our understanding of the warning signs and risk factors of suicide. This course establishes the strong connections between bullying and suicide, suicide and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and offers language and strategies to prevent suicide. With protective and preventive resources, you will leave this course with goals and knowledge to advance awareness and understanding of suicide with students, families, in your school, and beyond.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Share important information reflecting teen mental health and suicide.
- Develop an informational artifact to inform families about non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI).
- Articulate the connection between suicide and bullying, especially pertaining to students who identify as LGBTQ+.
- Describe warning and risk factors of suicide in teens.
- Reflect on professional growth and articulate how learning from this course focused on suicide prevention will impact students and the broader educational community.
