What does it take to move beyond delivering a lesson to designing meaningful mathematical learning experiences? In this interactive institute, educators will engage in mathematical tasks, explore research-based instructional practices, and examine the progression of mathematical thinking while making connections to the NYC Solves math shifts. Participants will consider opportunities to deepen student understanding by making intentional instructional decisions that support all learners.
Session Outcomes:
1. Experience mathematical tasks that promote reasoning, sense-making, and productive struggle.
2. Analyze how mathematical understanding develops across grade levels to inform instructional decisions.
3. Examine research-based instructional practices highlighted in the NYSED Numeracy Briefs and explore their connections to the NYC Solves math shifts.
4. Apply the math shifts to identify opportunities to strengthen instruction, deepen student understanding, and support diverse learners.
5. Connect meaningful mathematical learning experiences to NYSED’s Portrait of a Graduate.
