MAPS Elevate Your Writing for Organizational Success
In this course, participants will learn the basics of effective writing and the feedback process, the differences between strength-based and deficit communication, how to use and create an organizational style guide, and how to use editing tools to improve organizational writing processes.
MAPS virtual courses are highly participatory and interactive.
Our instructors engage the participants by using many of the features of Zoom: breakout rooms, chat window, polling, class discussions, and share screen. The MAPS online experience will be similar to MAPS in-person; your learning requires your involvement.

Pre-Work
Please plan to complete approximately 2 hours of pre-work before the course date.
Virtual MAPS courses include pre-work to provide foundational knowledge and ensure that all MAPS courses offer 6 hours of instructional content. While pre-work varies by course and instructor, activities may include reading articles or book chapters, listening to podcasts, watching videos, completing assessments, or submitting documents.
Pre-work materials and instructions will be emailed to registered participants at least one week prior to the course date.

Course Description
In this course, participants will learn the basics of effective writing and the feedback process, the differences between strength-based and deficit communication, how to use and create an organizational style guide, and how to use editing tools to improve organizational writing processes. Content will focus on writing for organizational purposes.
Intended Audience
This course is geared towards individuals whose jobs require them to write and review documents. However, effective writing is important regardless of your job role or function. Therefore, this course is open to all audiences as it can help all participants develop and improve their writing and communication practices.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Identify the key concepts related to effective writing in organizations
- Practice and integrate the key concepts of effective writing into their work
- Use the foundation of effective writing and the feedback process, understand strength-based writing and the importance of using an organizational style guide, and use editing tools to improve your writing, editing, and document review practices

Instructor

Sunny L. Munn, PhD, is an educator, evaluator, and organizational change agent who employs an asset-based approach to address complex challenges across education, workforce development, and social services. Her expertise spans the education-to-workforce continuum—from early childhood through adulthood—including workforce supports, diverse family structures, and work-life systems. Dr. Munn partners with organizations to improve impact through rigorous mixed-methods evaluations, designs and facilitates learning opportunities that elevate organizational writing processes, and applies equity-centered frameworks to drive program innovation and systemic change. An experienced academic, she also teaches university courses in adult education and human resource development, leadership, and public affairs. Dr. Munn has a PhD and MA in Workforce Development and Education, a Masters of Public Affairs, a BS in Psychology, and a BA in African American and African Studies, from The Ohio State University.

Requirements for a Virtual Course
- A device that has a working microphone is required. A camera is strongly recommended. The online courses use features that enhance your experience with the use of your device’s camera and microphone for interaction and participation.
- Pre-work
Virtual MAPS courses include approximately 2 hours of pre-work. Pre-work materials and instructions will be emailed to participants at least one week prior to the course date.
Cancellation Policy
If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration at least five (5) business days before the course date to receive a refund. The last day to cancel for this course is January 20, 2027.
Follow these steps to make a cancellation:

- Enter the confirmation number from the registration email
- At the top of the page, click on “Cancel Registration” button
- Click Finish
Substitutions
Can't make it to the course? You can always send someone in your place. Substitutions can be made until the day of the course, January 27, 2027.
Follow these steps to make a substitution:
- Refer to your registration confirmation email
- Scroll down to "Substitutions"
- Follow link in email
- Enter the confirmation number from the registration email
- At the top of the page, click on the “Substitute Registrant” button
- Enter the name and email of the new registrant
- Click Next
- Click Confirm
CEU and CPE Policy
Attendance in this course can earn:
- 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
- 7.2 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs)
Attendance is recorded at check-in at the start of the day, and full CEU or CPE credit is awarded based on an honor system, with the expectation that participants are present and actively engaged for the full MAPS course
Course Certificate
Your course certificate will be emailed to you following the course. It will reflect your Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs) earned and your attendance of the course.
Waitlist
What happens if I am on a waitlist for a course? You will receive an email confirming you have been added to a waitlist. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified by email.
Photography
The Ohio State University may occasionally take pictures during educational events for use in program communication. If you do not want to be photographed during this course, please email the MAPS team at glenn-training@osu.edu.
MAPS Membership
A MAPS member receives a discounted rate of $250 for each course with the initial purchase of at least 12 credits. Each credit equals one course for one individual.
