
An Overview of Transference and Countertransference and the Use of Harm Reduction

This training will review the concepts of harm reduction and its partnering with the stages of change of MI and MET as they relate to the development of transference and countertransference in work with clients. Special focus will be upon the sources and types of countertransference that can be associated with working with clients utilizing harm reduction, especially in encountering the factors of high risk substance use, criminality, generational differences, etc.
In this training, participants will:
- Explore the concept of harm reduction and the emotional impact on providers in utilizing this model
- Discuss the counter-transferential impacts that occur in each stage of change of MI and MET and how they can impact the implementation of harm reduction
- Reframe the concept of harm reduction as the most common approach for change that humans utilize even when risk might be significant as compared to abstinence
- Review areas of most predominant transferential and countertransferential responses
- Overview "horn" and "halo" effects of transference and countertransference and their impact on treatment outcome
