Urban Stormwater Challenges in Changing Climates

Most people in Australia live in an urban watershed. Intense urban development for the last 2 decades has impacted the watershed and will continue to impact in future. With changing climate, the volume of surface water is dwindling whereas stormwater in watershed by rainfall is becoming more unpredictable and growing. Along with urban water volume, diffused pollution from the urban watershed has become threat to surface water and groundwater. Urban water management has become a key issue and is challenging. Many past and present engineering concepts and adopted designs have become inadequate to address the ongoing and emerging issues.

Dr. Rupak Aryal,

Rupak Aryal received his PhD from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 2003 in urban stormwater quality and quantity. Since then, he spent his time in the research, teaching and consulting in water and stormwater at various organisations in Australia (University of Technology Sydney (2007-2010, 2018-2019), University of Queensland (2010-2012) University of South Australia (2012-2017), La Trobe University 2020-2021) and overseas (the University of Tokyo (Japan), Kathmandu University (Nepal), Ulsan University (South Korea)). Dr. Aryal’s area of expertise include urban stormwater and integrated management, surface water (lake and river), drinking water treatment technology, wastewater, and treatment technology.
