Who Speaks For Nashville Now? Local Journalism and Democratic Accountability

Newspapers once spoke for cities; holding power accountable with aggressive news coverage, editorial comment, and investigations, shaping civic identity, giving residents a shared sense of what was happening and why it mattered.

Nashville has lost most of that infrastructure in a generation. The old Tennessean is fundamentally different today. The Capitol Hill press corps has been hollowed out. The Nashville Banner folded and was recently revived in digital form. The Scene operates on a shoestring. The statehouse press corps has largely disappeared. 

What happens to democratic accountability when no one is watching?
