Summary - Argonne Water Testbed for Critical Minerals and PFAS Workshop

Water Testbed Workshop focused on two of the most pressing challenges at the intersection of water technology and national resource, economic, and environmental security: critical minerals recovery from primary and secondary sources, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) treatment. The invitation-only workshop will bring together leading researchers, industry practitioners, and federal agency representatives to advance a shared understanding of the testbed capabilities and infrastructure needed to accelerate technology development and deployment in these areas.

The workshop will address critical minerals recovery from a broad range of feedstocks, such as mineral leachates, produced waters, brines, mine tailings, industrial manufacturing waste streams, and leachates generated during spent electronic devices and waste permanent magnet treatment, as well as the full PFAS treatment train, encompassing sensing and detection, capture and concentration, transport, and destructive treatment technologies. Sessions will be structured to facilitate open discussion and direct stakeholder input via multiple panel discussions and roundtables/surveys, rather than formal presentations alone. The primary goal of this workshop is to collect your insights and perspectives on water testbed needs, capability gaps, and priority requirements that will inform the design and development of next-generation testbed infrastructure. The workshop also will feature a tour of Argonne’s Materials Engineering Research Facility (MERF) that is designed for scale-up manufacturing of materials including water materials.
