COURSE OVERVIEW

Alaska Alive! is a self-paced, online professional learning course that meets the Alaska Department of Education's requirements for teacher certification in Alaska Studies.  It is specifically designed for educators.  You do not have to be currently teaching in a classroom to take this course

This course aims to provide learners with the tools, knowledge, and abilities to be successful in an Alaska school! You will learn the context of education in Alaska as it relates to Alaska Native cultures, social systems, governance structures, historical contexts of education, and the current systems that impact communities, families, and most importantly, students! This course takes a community asset-based approach to understanding education. How these all work together and effect you, as a teacher in our schools, is what is important! 

The focus of this course is to help students to:

  • Gain awareness and understanding of Alaska’s educational history as it relates to Alaska Native peoples, particularly in rural Alaska
  • Encourage students to consider practical and meaningful approaches to integrating the cultural standards into their classrooms
  • Take a community asset-based approach to understanding Alaska’s culturally rich and diverse communities

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Gain awareness of Alaska Native history, cultures and peoples from a broad level 
  • Explore impacts from trading, religion, mining, and governance and how it shaped Alaska and people
  • Learn about Alaska’s current education structures, community organizations, and key players
  • Explore integrating the Alaska Cultural Standards into your classroom focusing on Equity, Inclusion, Diversity

  • Methods of Instruction - Readings, written responses, 3-5 minute final video presentation.  No quizzes, examinations or meetings. 
  • Coursework takes place in our ASDN Canvas environment.

  • Cancellation of this course, within one week of registration, will result in a $75.00 cancellation fee. 
  • Refunds will not be issued after 1 week.

Sharon has more than 40 years of experience working with students, teachers and administrators from around the state. Sharon was a teacher and the district technology coordinator in Anchorage.  She served two terms on the Board of Directors of Alaska Geographic, the nonprofit education partner of Alaska’s public parks, forests, and refuges. She is a 50-year veteran of the state and currently resides in Anchorage.
