The UK’s maritime and ports sector is entering a transformative phase in response to a rapidly evolving policy and regulatory landscape. The recently published UK Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy (March 2025), the Department for Transport’s UK SHORE R&D programme, the National Port Strategy (NPS), and forthcoming domestic fuel regulations (expected 2026) demonstrate the significance of coordinated policy, planning, and investment. Such coordination is essential to enable low- and zero-carbon energy, including increased electrification, across UK ports.

Electrification, from shore power to electric cargo handling equipment (CHE) and wharf cartage and drayage charging, reduces emissions, improves operational efficiency, supports local economies, and enhances community well-being, all while contributing to the country’s Net Zero ambitions.

Despite the clear benefits, the transition is complex. A major challenge is securing sufficient power and timely grid connectivity for large-scale electrification. Many UK ports already operate at or near grid capacity, and major charging infrastructure cannot proceed without substantial reinforcement. Upgrades are costly and often delayed by long connection queues. Overcoming these constraints will require coordinated action among ports, distribution network operators (DNOs), the National Energy System Operator (NESO), technology providers, and government.

In this context, Global Transmission Report is excited to launch the Port Electrification UK Conference, taking place on June 25, 2026, at the Park Plaza London Riverbank. The event will bring together port authorities, terminal operators, regulators, technology providers, energy suppliers, and grid planners to exchange insights, showcase pioneering projects, and explore practical solutions to the technical, operational, and regulatory challenges of port electrification.

This inaugural conference builds on the success of our Port Electrification series in the US. Over the past three years, this series convened hundreds of stakeholders to discuss how US ports are meeting rising energy demands, transitioning to zero-emission equipment, and responding to rapidly evolving decarbonisation mandates. This UK edition will focus on the country’s unique regulatory context and operational environment.

Participants will gain the knowledge, networks, and insights needed to accelerate port electrification, enhance operational efficiency, and align their initiatives with the UK’s maritime and energy transition goals.
