COURSE OVERVIEW

Our students deserve a world they can navigate with a strong sense of self, and the courage to make social change. Learners Edge is proud to partner again with IndieFlix to provide video clips and resources from the film,The Upstanders, to support both SEL and brain science related to bullying prevention. This course provides tools to empower bystanders to become upstanders, and it encourages victims that there is safety in remaining strong in who they are. Learners create activities focused on empathy, and well-being, and analyze bullying prevention policies for equity and inclusion. Educators will leave this course understanding the complicated nature of bullying and the many ways they and their students can be part of the solution.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Use provided prompts specific to bullying to describe assumptions and insights of practitioners, researchers and self, including how the information relates to professional educational practice. 
  • Design recommendations for improvements and enhancements to school or district policy related to bullying prevention.  
  • Prepare an activity to collaborate with cross-curricular colleagues to disseminate knowledge on brain science related to bullying.  
  • Implement a daily practice of dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins (DOSE) in your classroom.
  • Develop an action plan to challenge the status quo related to the bystander effect.

  • Grades for this session are released beginning January 2, 2026.  Allow 2 weeks from this date or any completion date thereafter for your grade to be processed and delivered to ASDN. 
  • Registration for the following session opens March 16, 2026, with coursework due August 15, 2026. Grades for the session will be released beginning May 16, 2026.
  • Extensions and re-enrollments are not permitted.
  • You may cancel within one week of registration.  A $100.00 cancellation fee will be applied.

Regina Santiago holds a Master’s in Education with a focus in Literacy.  She has been a Kindergarten and First and Second grade Teacher for the past 10 years.  Regina’s current role is a Coordinator of Culture and Heritage, where she creates and delivers anti-bias curriculum for K-6 grade students.  Regina also writes curriculum and children’s books.
