Course Overview

Course Description

This session is focused on how you as a leader can support organizational or institutional changes as an insider.  Taken from the “Tempered Radicals” work by Meyerson (2004), this session will focus on change management approaches and will discuss how to lead change by your influence as an insider.  Participants will learn about the dynamics of change and what it takes to be socially responsible, no matter where you sit in an organization.  The session will end with suggested activities to get started as a Tempered Radical in leading collective action. 

Participants should have some familiarity with change management theories in order to complete a thorough critique and analysis, but these will be explored in the course in great detail.  The session will also focus on change management implementation around celebrating small wins, uniting others, and knowing that your influence will guide organizational change from wherever you sit.  

Intended Audience

This course is designed for entry level leaders in organizations who are interested in growing their awareness of change leadership, with a focus on implementing suggested activities.  Participants will participate in sample activities and should be ready and willing to engage in these activities. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to: 

• Become familiar with Meyerson’s work on being a Tempered Radical (2004)
• Understand the dynamics of leading change from a place within an organization
• Understand how tempered radicals facilitate action in organizations where others can get on board
• Apply leadership strategies to build confidence and self-efficacy in leading change

Instructor

Dr. Don Stenta serves as Distinguished Adjunct Professor with the Glenn College where he focuses on teaching in the Certificate for Public and Nonprofit program, graduate and undergraduate leadership courses, a graduate course in higher education policy, and serving on student admissions committees. Don has worked at Ohio State for over 30 years and spent 25 of those years in student services roles, including 5 years as Associate Director of the Glenn Institute and then Glenn School. Don has taught classes with the Glenn College since 2005.

Don has been honored at the Glenn College with the Outstanding Teaching Award, at Ohio State with the Distinguished Staff Award, and in Columbus as a Top 40 Under 40 community leader, along with many student organization advisor and service awards.

Don earned a PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership from Ohio State, a Master of Education from the University of Vermont, and a Bachelor of Arts from Binghamton University.

Waitlist
What happens if I am on a waitlist for a course? You will receive an email confirming you have been added to a waitlist. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified by email.  

CEU and CPE Policy
Attendance in this course can earn:

• 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
• 7.2 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs)

Attendance is recorded at check-in at the start of the day, and full CEU or CPE credit is awarded based on an honor system, with the expectation that participants are present and actively engaged for the full MAPS course.

Course Certificate
Your course certificate will be emailed to you following the course. It will reflect your Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs) earned and your attendance of the course. 

Photography
The Ohio State University may occasionally take pictures during educational events for use in program communication. If you do not want to be photographed during this course, please email the MAPS team at glenn-training@osu.edu.

MAPS Membership 
A MAPS member receives a discounted rate of $250 for each course with the initial purchase of at least 12 credits. Each credit equals one course for one individual.
