Summary - FAMU Summer Band Camp 2026 - Chamber Music | Jazz Music | Music Production

Chamber Music is one of the unique features of the FAMU summer band camp. Our chamber program will offer students opportunities to perform music in smaller settings that relates to woodwind, brass, and percussion ensembles. Literature will focus and meet students where they are, but also motivate those campers who desire to perform advance literature and prepare them for next level performances. A major bonus will include offering campers’ masterclasses on every instrument in the wind, percussion, and string family. This year we’ve added a concentration for piano campers that will strengthen their knowledge on standard piano literature.

Jazz Music is American music that is characterized by Improvisation, Syncopation and rhythmic forward motion known as Swing. This music has its roots in the African American communities in New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Elements of jazz can be found in most of today’s popular music. Studying jazz music is beneficial to the development of a well- rounded musician.

This comprehensive camp provides students the opportunity to study and learn from world class professional and accomplished jazz musicians. Various jazz styles and contemporary music are covered in this camp. Students will learn to improve sight music reading, ensemble performance, stylistic interpretation and improvisation skills. Small and large group studies with professional jazz musicians on each instrument will be provided. The camp will provide instruction for students at all skill and ability levels.

Daily sessions include the following topics:

Improvisation , Jazz History , Jazz Theory Listening/Ear Training , Sectional Masterclasses , Jazz Ensemble , Combo, Jam Sessions

Music Industry Production refers to the individuals and organizations that earn money by writing songs and musical compositions, creating and selling recorded music and sheet music, presenting concerts, as well as the organizations that aid, train, represent and supply music creators. Among the many individuals and organizations that operate in the industry are: the songwriters and composers who write songs and musical compositions; the singers, musicians, conductors, and bandleaders who perform the music; the record labels, music publishers, recording studios, music producers, audio engineers, retail and digital music stores, and performance rights organizations who create and sell recorded music and sheet music; and the booking agents, promoters, music venues, road crew, and audio engineers who help organize and sell concerts.

The industry also includes a range of professionals who assist singers and musicians with their music careers. These include talent managers, artists and repertoire managers, business managers, entertainment lawyers; those who broadcast audio or video music content (satellite, Internet radio stations, broadcast radio and TV stations); music journalists and music critics; DJs; music educators and teachers; manufacturers of musical instruments and music equipment; as well as many others.

The Choral Camp aims to conclude with a community concert performance consisting of ensemble(s) and an Honor student solo a recital performance for those who choose to study applied voice. Camp participants may choose both.

Ensembles will spend two hours per day working on choral and choir literature. Genres to include following; multicultural works, one classical standard, a cappella spiritual, gospel, inspirational, r&b, pop…
The Honors Solo Recital is a special performance. Students will train one hour per day to prepare one or two songs for a joint recital. All participants will sing on the same recital. The solo recital efforts – aim focus is to support the students who desire to participate in solo and ensemble events at their perspective school’s district evaluation events and to properly train and prepare students for music scholarship auditions at various Colleges and Universities.

All camp participants will take a music theory class. The class will teach the basics of reading and counting rhythms, identifying and singing intervals, sight-singing, learning solfege and identifying key signatures.

Campers who participate in either of these camps will receive an introduction to the music industry and music production. They will receive instruction and learn more about the Business Structure, Compositions (songs), Recordings, Media, Broadcast, Soundtrack & Streaming. Live music (promoter influences), Artist management (representation and staff), Emerging business modes (home studio, laptop, Pro Tools Apple Computer, Spotify, and Google Play. Our goal is to ensure campers leave our campus knowledgeable about streaming platforms, and online music services, and the vast data that is processed. Learn from the FAMU band staff, Marching 100 members, and visiting directors. Over 100 of the band's present members have volunteered their time and effort in order to make this the best summer band camp in the country!
