MAPS Leadership 101

Course Overview

Course Description

Learn the core principles needed to serve as an effective leader of people and projects.  Leadership is both an art and a science and understanding the critical foundations to serve as a successful servant leader is critical.  This course will provide the tools and skills needed to lead teams and projects in your organization and team.  Drawing upon 20 years of leadership in the military, public sector, and consulting, this course will position new leaders to hit the ground running in their leadership journey.  This course is well suited for new or aspiring leaders, as well as those looking to continually develop their leadership acumen.

Intended Audience

This course is intended for new leaders or those interested in serving in a leadership/project management role and will provide instruction on the key tenets of effective leadership.  This course is geared towards those leaders that may have a basic understanding of project management or leadership, but could benefit from learning the key tools, strategies, and foundations needed to lead teams or projects  Often, new leaders are placed into positions of leadership responsibility/project management roles without formal training, guidance, or mentorship-this course aims to support these new leaders in serving as effective leaders for their organization.  

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

1. Understand the key principles required to effectively lead team members and projects
2. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the leadership development process, including the creation, implementation, and management of Individual Development Plans (IDPs)
3. Develop leadership coaching skills to effectively support and guide individuals through leadership challenges
4. Learn tangible methods, tools, and strategies to serve as a successful people leader and/or project manager in your organization
5. Gain a thorough understanding and applicability of servant leadership in today’s world.

Instructor

Eric Gentzel

Eric is an experienced and successful strategic consulting leader with 21 years of experience in project/program management, strategic leadership, training/facilitation, and leadership development. Eric has served in the U.S. Army for over 21 years between active duty and reserve, and currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel and adjunct instructor for the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officers Course (CGSOC). He co-founded and leads The Overwatch Partnership, a veteran mentoring nonprofit, and also provides strategic project management and PMO consulting services for NeuZeit Group. His career includes diverse project management and operational leadership experiences with Deloitte Consulting, Navigator Management Partners, and OhioHealth. Eric is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Prosci Change Management certified, and received a Master of Public Administration degree from UNC-Charlotte. Eric also serves as an instructor for The Ohio State University Management Advancement for the Public Service (MAPS) program.

Waitlist
What happens if I am on a waitlist for a course? You will receive an email confirming you have been added to a waitlist. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified by email.  

CEU and CPE Policy
Attendance in this course can earn:

• 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
• 7.2 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs)

Attendance is recorded at check-in at the start of the day, and full CEU or CPE credit is awarded based on an honor system, with the expectation that participants are present and actively engaged for the full MAPS course.

Course Certificate
Your course certificate will be emailed to you following the course. It will reflect your Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs) earned and your attendance of the course. 

Photography
The Ohio State University may occasionally take pictures during educational events for use in program communication. If you do not want to be photographed during this course, please email the MAPS team at glenn-training@osu.edu.

MAPS Membership 
A MAPS member receives a discounted rate of $250 for each course with the initial purchase of at least 12 credits. Each credit equals one course for one individual.
