Essentials of Coaching Training Program

The AMA Essentials of Coaching Training Program prepares faculty and educators to use coaching skills in everyday educational interactions and to conduct structured coaching sessions that support learner reflection, informed self-assessment, goal setting, and individualized professional development. This two-day, virtual experience brings together forward-thinking physicians, educators, learners, and academic and health system leaders to teach the foundations of coaching in medical education.

The AMA Essentials of Coaching Training Program will address the following priority areas in coaching:  

Day 1 | 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM CST 

  1. What is coaching?  
    Distinguishing coaching from advising, mentoring, teaching, and assessment  
  2. Coaching mindset and competencies  
    Identifying core behaviors including listening, curiosity, trust, questioning, promoting reflection, and learner agency  
  3. Coaching tools #1: Reflection and goals  
    Applying tools such as SMART and WOOP to support self-reflection, goal setting, and action planning  
  4. Master Adaptive Learner and coaching  
    Using coaching to support planning, learning, assessing, and adjusting  
  5. Precision education and portfolio coaching  
    Leveraging assessment data and portfolios to support insight, individualized goals, and learning plans 

Day 2 | 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM CST  

  1. Structure of a coaching session
    Planning for a successful session including coaching agreement, agenda setting, reflection, insight, goal setting, action planning, and follow-up  
  2. Coaching models and approaches
    Aligning coaching models with learner and program goals  
  3. Coaching tools #2: Values and identity
    Applying tools such as values wheels and life journey maps to support meaning-making and professional growth  
  4. Performance coaching and integration  
    Applying tools for just-in-time coaching and integrating feedback
  5. Creating a coaching culture  
    Integrating coaching into everyday interactions, including challenging conversations
