STP and Wastewater Management in India Best Practices, Innovations and Emerging Solutions

Summary

Rapid urbanisation and rising water demand are placing increasing pressure on existing water resources, making wastewater treatment and reuse an essential pillar of sustainable water management. India’s current treatment capacity stands at around 32,000 MLD, as against used water generation of over 52,000 MLD.
In recent years, significant investments have been made in developing sewage treatment infrastructure in India, supported by national missions, state and ULB-led initiatives and industry participation. However, substantial gaps remain in operational efficiency, wastewater reuse and industrial compliance.
The government has intensified its focus on sewage treatment through flagship programmes such as AMRUT, Namami Gange and the Swachh Bharat Mission. Significant financial support is being extended with an aim to strengthen treatment infrastructure and improve the sanitation ecosystem.
Industrial users are playing an increasingly important role in wastewater reuse, driven by freshwater scarcity, regulatory requirements and cost considerations. Sectors such as power, steel, textiles, pharmaceuticals and chemicals are adopting advanced treatment technologies, including Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems, membrane-based recycling and tertiary treatment solutions.
The adoption of digital technologies such as SCADA systems, IoT-enabled monitoring, AI-based analytics and GIS platforms is transforming wastewater management by enabling real-time performance monitoring, improving compliance and enhancing the operational efficiency of sewage treatment plants.
Going forward, the country is expected to add over 27,000 MLD of wastewater treatment capacity by 2033, as per India Infrastructure Research. The coming years will also see decentralised wastewater treatment systems, faecal sludge and septage management facilities, and nature-based treatment technologies emerge as viable solutions, particularly in areas with limited sewerage treatment capacity.

Mission

The mission of this conference is to discuss the key developments and emerging trends in the wastewater and sewage treatment segment in India, highlight upcoming opportunities and projects, and discuss the unresolved challenges. The conference will also highlight the trends and progress in the desalination and industrial water management segments. Moreover, it will showcase best practices, new and emerging technologies, and equipment solutions for water management and treatment.
