How do we help students move from recall of facts to recall for transfer?
In social studies, students need to do more than recall facts.   They need to analyze sources, make connections to contexts, develop interpretations and then transfer that learning across time and place to other topics.
In this full day Professional Development Institute, educators will practice strategies for building content knowledge, strengthening historical thinking and increasing transfer of skills and knowledge.  Using an inquiry process, participants will work with layered sources, engage in collaborative discussion routines, and use evidence to create visual narratives.   Throughout the session, educators will analyze, discuss and connect sources as they refine interpretations and share them with an audience.
Join us for this UFT Teacher Center Professional Development Institute to learn how, through:

  • Instructional strategies that build content knowledge, strengthen historical thinking, and support transfer of learning.
  • Historical inquiry with layered sources, collaborative discussion routines, and turning evidence into a visual narrative.
  • Strategic sequencing, discussion, and revisiting thinking to help students build context, refine interpretations, and make meaning across time periods.
