Course Description
Root resorption can present a significant diagnostic and treatment challenge, with management ranging from observation to endodontic treatment, surgical repair, or extraction. Accurate identification of the type, location, and extent of resorption is essential for selecting the optimal treatment approach and prognosis. This clinically focused course reviews the biologic basis and classification of root resorption, with particular emphasis on external invasive cervical resorption, which is the type most commonly encountered in clinical practice. Through the review of clinical cases, participants will learn how to distinguish internal from external lesions, evaluate the true extent of resorptive defects, and develop evidence-based treatment strategies. Case selection, treatment techniques, prognosis, and long-term outcomes will be discussed with an emphasis on practical application in everyday clinical practice.
Course Objectives:
1. Classify the major forms of internal and external root resorption and describe their underlying etiologies and pathophysiology.
2. Differentiate internal and external resorptive lesions using clinical findings, conventional radiography, and CBCT imaging.
3. Evaluate the location and extent of a resorptive defect to determine its impact on treatment planning and prognosis.
4. Select appropriate management strategies—including observation, nonsurgical endodontic treatment, surgical repair, and extraction—based on the type and severity of resorption.
5. Apply clinical and radiographic findings to treatment decisions through case-based examples of resorptive lesions. .
