Ventia  Utility Services (Ventia) in conjunction with the National Measurement  Institute (NMI), Eurofins and Australian Laboratory Services (ALS) were  awarded the inaugural Australasian Land and Groundwater Association  (ALGA) Research and Development Grant to conduct the project ‘Improving Measurement Reliability of the PFAS TOP Assay’.

The  per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) total oxidisable precursor  (TOP) assay is an oxidative sample pre-treatment aimed at converting  per- and poly-fluorinated non-target PFAS (perfluoroalkyl acid  precursors) within a sample into stable target perfluoroalkyl acids  (PFAAs) that can be quantified by conventional Liquid  Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) analytical  techniques.

The project involved preparation of four unique PFAS spiked water samples for blind analysis by NMI, Eurofins and ALS.

The  results of the analysis were assessed and will be presented as part of  this webinar. The webinar will also describe recommendations developed  by the project team for successful application of the TOP assay to  complex sample matrices and interpretation of results.

This session will be chaired by Charles Grimison from Ventia who will  conclude the session with audience driven questions and answers.

Karl Bowles specialises in fate & transport and impacts of chemical contaminants, and has 25 years of  experience in environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, and risk  assessment within research, consultancy, university and government  sectors. He has provided PFAS technical advice to state and federal  government departments and agencies including development of technical  policy and guideline values. Karl has a strong interest in research to  address key knowledge gaps for risk assessment of PFAS.
