Course Overview
Course Description
Transitioning into leadership requires more than technical expertise. It requires a new mindset, stronger communication skills, intentional decision-making, and the ability to support and influence others effectively.
New Leader Foundations is an interactive leadership development workshop designed to help new and emerging leaders successfully navigate the transition from individual contributor to people leader. Participants explore core leadership foundations including leadership mindset, communication, reframing challenges, asking thoughtful questions, giving and receiving feedback, prioritization, delegation, and personal leadership planning.
Throughout the course, participants learn practical leadership tools and techniques they can immediately apply with their teams and through daily responsibilities. This workshop blends reflection, discussion, real-world application, peer learning, and hands-on activities to help leaders build confidence and create a strong foundation for long-term leadership success.
Intended Audience
This course is designed for new and emerging leaders who are transitioning into people leadership responsibilities for the first time or within their first few years of leadership. It is ideal for supervisors, team leads, frontline managers, and high-potential employees preparing for future leadership roles. The workshop is especially valuable for individuals seeking greater confidence, stronger communication skills, and practical leadership tools to effectively lead teams and navigate day-to-day leadership challenges.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, the participants will be able to:
- Identify mindset shifts required to transition successfully into leadership
- Use reframing techniques to approach challenges with greater objectivity and possibility
- Ask more effective questions to support problem-solving, coaching, and engagement
- Give and receive feedback more confidently and constructively
- Prioritize work more effectively using the Eisenhower Method
- Delegate responsibilities with greater clarity and accountability
- Develop a practical leadership action plan focused on growth and application

Instructor

With over 20 years of learning and talent development experience, Lisa nurtures talent by focusing on the unique contributions leaders can make to grow their teams and the organization. Lisa translates insights into meaningful outcomes by highlighting the intersection of learning connection, and strategic thinking.
After growing up in East Palestine, located in northeastern Ohio, Lisa established her family and career in the Columbus area. She has her Bachelors degrees in Communications and Spanish from The Ohio State University, then went on to earn her Masters degree in Human Resources also from The Ohio State University.
Throughout her career, Lisa has demonstrated leadership abilities in progressive roles within internationally-known organizations including Macy’s, L Brands, Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, and Safelite Autoglass. After leaving the corporate world, she brought her talents to Kane Learning; a boutique consulting firm with expertise in team effectiveness, people leadership, human resources, strategic planning, communications and marketing. Kane Learning has Fortune 500 companies, small business, and non-profits on their client list, all of whom benefit from custom delivered solutions.
Lisa is active in the community alongside her husband and 4 teenage children all of whom enjoy the outdoors, traveling, and trying out new foods.

Michelle specializes in executive coaching and organizational effectiveness. She is passionate about helping individuals, teams, andcompanies achieve their goals and objectives. Michelle's pastexperience includes a 25 year career in specialty retail with field andhome office executive leadership roles.
Michelle received her Executive Coaching certification from the Center for Executive Coaching and graduatedfrom Franklin University’s Master of Business Administration program.
Giving back through community involvement is very important to Michelle. She currently serves on the Board ofTrustees for Home for Families, a non-profit organization working to end homelessness for children in CentralOhio.

Cancellation Policy
If you are unable to attend, please cancel your registration at least five (5) business days before the course date to receive a refund. The last day to cancel for this course is May 12, 2027.

Can't make it to the course? You can always send someone in your place. Substitutions can be made until the day of the course, May 19, 2027.

Waitlist
What happens if I am on a waitlist for a course? You will receive an email confirming you have been added to a waitlist. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified by email.
CEU and CPE Policy
Attendance in this course can earn:
- 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
- 7.2 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs)
Attendance is recorded at check-in at the start of the day, and full CEU or CPE credit is awarded based on an honor system, with the expectation that participants are present and actively engaged for the full MAPS course.
Course Certificate
Your course certificate will be emailed to you following the course. It will reflect your Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEs) earned and your attendance of the course.
Photography
The Ohio State University may occasionally take pictures during educational events for use in program communication. If you do not want to be photographed during this course, please email the MAPS team at glenn-training@osu.edu.
MAPS Membership
A MAPS member receives a discounted rate of $250 for each course with the initial purchase of at least 12 credits. Each credit equals one course for one individual.
