COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is designed to help the learner gain a more comprehensive understanding of alcohol, drugs, and their influences in the classroom. It provides a contextual framework for understanding what students may be experiencing either through their own substance use or as a result of the substance use of persons close to them and provides a basic historical perspective of substance use along with the biological, psychological, and social factors that comprise the disease of addiction. Upon course completion, the learner will better understand the complex dynamics that contribute to this biological and social phenomenon.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the history of alcohol and drugs in society and their impact on current beliefs in our culture
  • Develop a basic understanding of the “biopsychosocial” nature of addiction
  • Understand the disease concept of addiction
  • Identify different drugs and their effects on the body
  • Understand the effects of substance abuse on child development and family systems
  • Develop a foundation of understanding of prevention, intervention and supports

Karen Lea holds a Ph.D. in education. Dr. Lea has fifteen years’ experience teaching at the K-12 level and another fourteen years’ experience teaching education courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. Currently she is a coordinator for a cadre of instructional developers and project manager for aerospace online training. Dr. Lea has been professionally published over fifteen times and has served on over a dozen panels and boards, including serving on the NCATE (CAEP) Board of Examiners.
