SUMMARY
- The current global energy crisis has reiterated the need to move away from oil and gas for meeting transportation requirements and shift to electric vehicles (EVs) across all segments at the earliest. Thus, EV sales in India have spiked significantly this year and reports indicate more than 40 per cent rise in the EV market during the first half of 2026 when compared to that of 2025.
- This growth momentum is expected to continue owing to increasing fuel prices, enabling central and state-level policy initiatives, and a growing product and manufacturer ecosystem. In fact, the country aims to have EV sales account for 30 per cent of private cars, 70 per cent of commercial vehicles and 80 per cent of two- and three-wheelers by 2030.
- The country’s EV charging infrastructure market, which has been slow to scale up, is also showing signs of revival with this surge in EV sales. While states, cities and utilities have their own plans to promote the development of EV charging infrastructure in their specific regions, CPOs are tying up with real estate developers and petrol retail outlets to expand EV charging points. At the same time, rapid electrification of fleets for last-mile goods delivery, city buses as well as taxis is giving the much-needed boost to the overall EV landscape in the country.
- Accordingly, the EV charging and battery swapping market is also changing with the emergence of innovative business models, adequate regulatory frameworks and standards, increasing foray of new technology and service providers, as well as the development of a new market for software and applications.
- Renewable Watch is organising a 1-day conference on “EV Charging Infrastructure in India" : Focus on EV charging infrastructure” to provide a forum for all key stakeholders including policymakers, charge point operators, fleet operators, technology providers, manufacturers, transport operators, aggregators, automobile companies, battery suppliers, utilities and consultants. The discussions will focus on the growth trends in India’s expanding EV charging landscape, specific policies and initiatives in this space, plans of utilities, fleet operators, CPOs and technology providers, as well as the financing landscape for promoting scale-up of EV charging infrastructure in India.
