Course Description
This 3-day, 24-hour course covers fundamental principles of battery-based systems including understanding customer needs and utility requirements; specifying and sizing a battery bank, inverters, and charge controllers for battery-based systems; defining system architecture and functionality; battery metering; and understanding the code implications of these systems. The various benefits and challenges of lithium chemistries and lead batteries are analyzed. The course will end with a tour of a commercial PV installation with a battery system.
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of solar PV; currently working in the solar industry; and/or have taken a fundamentals course such as FSPV: Fundamentals of Solar Photovoltaic Design and Installation offered by the NC Clean Energy Technology Center.
NABCEP PV Certifications: ASPV counts for up to 24 approved advanced credit hours needed to sit for multiple NABCEP Certification Exams and recertification credits. Please visit the course listing on NABCEP’s website for complete information.

- Perform a load analysis for sizing components of a PV system
- Specify and size inverters, charge controllers for battery-based system
- Define system architecture options and functionality
- Understand the differences between stand-alone and grid-connected battery systems

- Add battery backup to existing grid-direct PV system
- Understand code implications of these systems
- Understand the latest offerings in Energy Storage Systems

Continuing Education Credits
Based on previous courses, it is estimated that the following continuing education credits will be awarded after the successful completion:
- 19 PDHs for North Carolina Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, approved by the NC Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (NCBELS)
- 24 LU | HSWs for Registered Architects, approved by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), course code SS2024
- 24.0 CEs are approved by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC)

Registering Multiple People
If you are registering multiple people from the same company, complete the information for the first person, and then on the Registration Summary page, click on "Add Group Member" to start the process for the next person. When you are finished adding individuals, click next on the Registration Summary page and you will be able to pay for the group in one transaction.
Payment Information
We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to pay registration fees. If you need to pay by check, purchase order, IDT, grant or scholarship, please contact the training team at cleanenergy@ncsu.edu and we will be happy to assist you.
Payment Plan
Credit card payments may be made in 3-5 installments. At the end of the registration process, you may select to pay by installment payments. A member of the training team will contact you with additional instructions on how to set up your installment payments. The installment payments will be automatically drafted once a month. Please note that full payment of the course must be received before the start of the course.
Cancellation and Refund Policies
Cancellation requests should be sent to CleanEnergy@ncsu.edu for processing. Cancellations:
- 32+ days before the course, receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee
- 15-31 days before the course, receive a 50% refund
- 8-14 days before the course, receive a 25% refund
- 0-7 days before the course are ineligible for a refund
Attendee substitutions from within the same company may be made at any time before the start of the course at no cost. Please send an email to CleanEnergy@ncsu.edu with the name of the current registrant and the name and email address of the new registrant to begin the substitution process.

The StateView Hotel is located on campus near the NC Clean Energy Technology Center.

What to Bring
You are required to wear closed-toed shoes or boots with rubber soles for the hands-on portion of the course (Friday)
The following items are recommended:
- A laptop to view the course materials website during class, note-taking, and other activities (optional)
- Notepad, pen, and highlighters
- Water bottle and snacks
- Sweatshirt or sweater - the training room is chilly
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- A long-sleeve shirt
- Work gloves
- A rain jacket and/or coat, depending on the time of year and the weather
Attendance Requirement
90% attendance during the course is required to receive a certificate of completion. You will be expected to sign in each day to mark your attendance.
