Course Description
This 5-day, 40-hour advanced photovoltaics course covers advanced topics on the design and installation of residential and commercial PV systems and delves into the details of electrical standards and codes. The bulk of this weeklong workshop covers topics relating to the National Electrical Code® (NEC) requirements for PV systems and prepares the participant for proper code compliance, wire sizing, equipment specifications, permit processing, commissioning, and other necessary steps in the design and installation phases of residential and commercial systems. Activities in this workshop include designing a multiple inverter commercial PV system, from choosing equipment to processing forms, and a tour of commercial rooftop PV systems.
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of solar PV; currently working in the solar industry; and/or have taken a fundamentals course such as FSPV: Fundamentals of Solar Photovoltaic Design and Installation offered by the NC Clean Energy Technology Center.
NABCEP PV Certifications: ASPV counts for up to 40 approved advanced credit hours needed to sit for multiple NABCEP Certification Exams and recertification credits. Please visit the course listing on NABCEP’s website for complete information.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Apply Grid-tied PV system design and understand DC/AC ratio and inverter clipping.
- Identify optimum sites for solar electric systems and accurately estimate power and energy productionÂ
- Navigate and interpret NEC Article 690Â and Article 705
- Identify and interpret required disconnects, combiner specifications, and mechanical drawings
- Calculate inter-row shading and wire sizing
- Identify best practices for physical inspections, electrical testing and commissioning
- Troubleshoot ground faults
- Design and draw a 3 line diagram for a multi-inverter commercial system

Registering Multiple People
If you are registering multiple people from the same company, complete the information for the first person, and then on the Registration Summary page, click on "Add Group Member" to start the process for the next person. When you are finished adding individuals, click next on the Registration Summary page and you will be able to pay for the group in one transaction.

We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to pay registration fees. If you need to pay by check, purchase order, IDT, grant or scholarship, please contact the training team at cleanenergy@ncsu.edu and we will be happy to assist you.
Payment Plan
Credit card payments may be made in 3-5 installments. At the end of the registration process, you may select to pay by installment payments. A member of the training team will contact you with additional instructions on how to set up your installment payments. The installment payments will be automatically drafted once a month. Please note that full payment of the course must be received before the start of the course.
Cancellation and Refund Policies
Cancellation requests should be sent to CleanEnergy@ncsu.edu for processing. Cancellations:
- 32+ days before the course, receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee
- 15-31 days before the course, receive a 50% refund
- 8-14 days before the course, receive a 25% refund
- 0-7 days before the course are ineligible for a refund
Attendee substitutions from within the same company may be made at any time before the start of the course at no cost. Please send an email to CleanEnergy@ncsu.edu with the name of the current registrant and the name and email address of the new registrant to begin the substitution process.

What to Bring
You are required to wear closed-toed shoes or boots with rubber soles for the hands-on portion of the course (Friday)
The following items are recommended:
- A laptop to view the course materials website during class, note-taking, and other activities (optional)
- Notepad, pen, and highlighters
- Water bottle and snacks
- Sweatshirt or sweater - the training room is chilly
Attendance Requirement
90% attendance during the course is required to receive a certificate of completion. You will be expected to sign in each day to mark your attendance.
