Course Description

This 5-day, 40-hour course is dedicated to the fundamental technical aspects of solar photovoltaic (PV) design and installation. This includes a study of system types, components, applications, design, and best practices for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The first four days are taught in a classroom format and focus on cumulative technical theory. On the fifth day, participants engage in a hands-on installation of a fully integrated grid-tied, residential PV system.

Prerequisites: None

NABCEP PV Associate Exam: The 40-hour course is based on NABCEP’s Learning Objectives for NABCEP PV Associate. After completing the FSPV course, participants are eligible to sit for the NABCEP PV Associate Exam. There is an additional $150 fee to sit for the exam. You will receive more information about the NABCEP exam during the course or you can visit NABCEP's website to learn more about the Associate PV Credential.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  1. Identify photovoltaic system components and system types
  2. Calculate electrical energy and power
  3. Identify optimum sites for solar electric systems
  4. Calculate electrical loads
  5. Correctly size system components
  6. Design series and parallel configurations for solar modules
  7. Design a basic grid-tied PV system
  8. Calculate PV system energy production
  9. Understand PV system equipment specification sheets
  10. Understand safety standards of installing PV systems
  11. Identify your competency level regarding the tasks on the NABCEP PV Associate Job Task Analysis and gauge readiness to take the NABCEP PV Associate Exam based on NABCEP PV Associate Learning Objectives.

Continuing Education Credits

  • 32 PDHs are approved by the NC Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (NCBELS)

  • 24.0 CEs are approved by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Electrical Contractors (NCBEEC)
  • 40 hours are approved to sit for the PV Associate Exam administered by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). For more information about the Associate Program, visit nabcep.org.

Registration and Payment Information

Registering Multiple People

If you are registering multiple people from the same company, complete the information for the first person, and then on the Registration Summary page, click on "Add Group Member" to start the process for the next person. When you are finished adding individuals, click next on the Registration Summary page and you will be able to pay for the group in one transaction.

Payment Information

We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to pay registration fees. If you need to pay by check, purchase order, IDT, grant or scholarship, please contact the training team at cleanenergy@ncsu.edu and we will be happy to assist you.

Payment Plan

Credit card payments may be made in 3-5 installments. At the end of the registration process, you may select to pay by installment payments. A member of the training team will contact you with additional instructions on how to set up your installment payments. The installment payments will be automatically drafted once a month. Please note that full payment of the course must be received before the start of the course.

Cancellation and Refund Policies

Cancellation requests should be sent to CleanEnergy@ncsu.edu for processing. Cancellations:

  • 32+ days before the course, receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee
  • 15-31 days before the course, receive a 50% refund
  • 8-14 days before the course, receive a 25% refund
  • 0-7 days before the course are ineligible for a refund

Attendee substitutions from within the same company may be made at any time before the start of the course at no cost. Please send an email to CleanEnergy@ncsu.edu with the name of the current registrant and the name and email address of the new registrant to begin the substitution process.

What to Bring

You are required to wear closed-toed shoes or boots with rubber soles for the hands-on portion of the course (Friday)

The following items are recommended:

  • A laptop to view the course materials website during class, note-taking, and other activities (optional)
  • Notepad, pen, and highlighters
  • Water bottle and snacks
  • Sweatshirt or sweater - the training room is chilly
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • A long-sleeve shirt
  • Work gloves
  • A rain jacket and/or coat, depending on the time of year and the weather

Attendance Requirement

90% attendance during the course is required to receive a certificate of completion. You will be expected to sign in each day to mark your attendance.
