Feeding & Families - A Conversation About Feeding and Eating in Early Intervention
Live Online via Zoom
SUMMARY
Children learn to eat through participation in developmentally appropriate family mealtime routines with caregivers they trust. Children develop functional eating skills if they gain experience, competence, and confidence. When this process is interrupted by the impact of medical challenges, developmental differences, or psychosocial dysfunction, children miss out on crucial learning opportunities and for caregivers, stress, confusion, and frustration rise. Early Intervention teams are in a unique position to be able to support families holistically. The importance of family-centered, collaborative approaches which build trust and partnership throughout intake, evaluation/assessment, and intervention for children and families with feeding concerns will be discussed.
This workshop is aimed at helping professionals in the early intervention system understand how to best support families of children with feeding difficulties. Focal points include aspects of intake, assessment, and intervention related to children with feeding struggles. A family-centered collaborative approach will be emphasized.
