Overview

Over the years, regulators and accrediting organizations have been increasingly scrutinizing the hospital governing body's role in its compliance with the conditions of participation. This presentation will examine the regulatory requirements for hospital boards and describe situations in which the governing body has been cited at the condition level.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • describe hospital responsibilities for credentialing nonphysician staff in the hospital
  • describe minimum requirements for medical staff bylaws, rules, regulations and governing body oversight
  • describe the governing board's responsibilities and specific responsibilities for patient rights, quality improvement, and medical staff credentialing
  • explain the differences in medical staff credentialing regulations for telemedicine and on-site providers
