This course is targeted at Texas Peace Officers wanting specialized training for firearms instructors. The basic firearm instructor course is designed to familiarize the student with the fundamentals that good shooting relies upon stance, grip, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control, and follow-through. Through the use of various techniques, these fundamentals will be instilled into the student. An integral part of firearms, weapons maintenance and malfunction clearance will be discussed and practiced to improve mastery. Night shooting and various flashlight techniques will be also be covered. This course will also familiarize the student with TCOLE rules pertaining to firearms and the requirements for qualification. Students must be a TCLOE instructor prior to attending this course or must obtain TCLOE instructor status prior to becoming a firearm instructor. The aspiring instructor should be able to qualify with a minimum of 90% prior to registering for this course. This course will be held at Midlothian Police Department’s gun range unless otherwise noted. The course is 40 hours (8:00 am – 5:00 pm). There will be some night-time training during the course as well. Students will be given the complete schedule on day one. NOTE: If you do not qualify by the second day then you will not be certified as a firearms instructor. We will allow you to complete the course for general credit only. Qual course available on request. Equipment and ammunition needs are as follows: • 1 semi-auto pistol (Duty) + 1000 rds practice + 50 rds. Duty ammunition • 1 revolver + 250 rds practice • 1 shotgun (duty) + 100 rds birdshot, 20 rds buck, 20 rds slug Duty • Gun cleaning kit for above weapons • Eye protection, ear protection • Extra magazines (if desired) • Paper and pen, Sunscreen, Water • Your department’s use of force policy
