Course Overview

Airway management of the critically ill, particularly in settings outside of the operating theatre is uniquely challenging. This two day course will help participants develop a safe, flexible approach to airway management issues, including the difficult airway and advanced skills such performing percutaneous tracheostomy, tailored to the specific requirements of the critically ill patients.

The course builds on online pre-course learning materials with interactive ‘hands on’ practical sessions and at least twelve different simulation scenarios that run the full gamut of airway crises in the critically ill. The faculty includes multi-disciplinary experts in the management of the critically ill airway, who are also enthusiastic expert educators and simulationists.

Course numbers are strictly limited due to small group skills sessions. Enrolment is on a first-in first-served basis.

Pre reading will be made available online 4 weeks prior to the course. A short post-course MCQ will be offered and those who complete this successfully will receive certification beyond participation.

• direct & video laryngoscopy
• endotracheal intubation
• awake intubation
• emergency surgical airways
• percutaneous tracheostomy
• selective lung intubation & double lumen tubes
• rapid sequence intubation and modified approaches
• airway management in austere environments
• management of tracheostomy emergencies
• extubation of the critically ill
• endotracheal tube exchange

Develop cognitive & teamwork skills:

• airway assessment and planning management
• how to continue to develop and maintain airway skills
• airway algorithms
• practical pharmacology
• considered approach to airway controversies in the      critically ill
• flexible approach to airway management tailored to      unique critical illnesses
• effective teamwork and leadership in an airway crisis

Who is this course for? This course is designed for the following:

Trainees in critical care specialties with previous experience managing airways (eg completed an anaesthetic rotation) and exposure to critically ill patients

• consultants and other senior doctors requiring an update or refresher in airway management of the critically ill
• suitably experienced prehospital healthcare providers (eg paramedics)

The course is not suitable for interns or junior residents with no prior exposure to critically ill patients or airway management.

CICM:

• Approved for 13.5 hours (Category 1: Educational Activities).
• Skill Station: Cat 3B- 3 points per hour (10Hrs 45Mins)
• Approved by CICM for the Specialist High Level Requirement (SHLR) CPD requirement for airway management, which must be completed by CICM fellows once every three years.
