Learning Objectives:

  • Apply fundamentals of rock mechanics: pore pressure and in situ stress estimation, linear elasticity, rock failure description and analysis
  • Calculate displacements, strains, and stresses of opening fractures
  • Evaluate stress shadow effects and investigate local stress reorientation and fracture interaction
  • Analyze strain response induced by opening fractures
  • Analyze near-tip stresses and determine fracture propagation direction
  • Summarize hydraulic fracture treatments and modeling in unconventional reservoirs
