We are excited to share with you that the 2024 Annual Conference of the NHCGNE has an excellent scientific program that is both innovative and timely.

This year’s theme, “Pursuit of excellence through cutting-edge sciences and practice: Driving age-friendly care for aging individuals,” focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), GenAI, and their applications in healthcare. Not only do we have many outstanding nurse leaders in the field to share with us their expertise and insights, but also experts and scholars from medicine, psychology, and nutritional epidemiology who will address topics crucial to healthy active aging. It is a rich program for researchers, clinicians, educators, and others.

Digital Health and Aging Today in the Care of Older Adults and Their Families

Articulate the significance of understanding and engaging in digital health, AI, and technological developments in the care of aging individuals and their families
State the impact of the digitalization of health services on research, education, and practice in gerontological nursing
Advocate for advancing the roles and functions of gerontological nurses in an era of digitalization in the healthcare sector

Functional Longevity and Resilience of Older Adults in Adversity

Articulate an awareness of how global epidemiological transitions have impacted gerontological nursing
Identify health practices and strategies in the promotion of functional longevity
Discuss the latest trends in research, education, and practice in different areas of specialty in gerontological nursing

Models of Care in the Digital Age

Identify the latest developments in the model of care pertaining to restorative and rehabilitative care, and palliative and end-of-life care
Deliberate pertinent issues including stakeholder engagement, required policy changes, and the preparation and training of gerontological nurses in the digital age
Identify ways to incorporate new concepts into one’s own practice, as well as engaging in dialogue and discourse with the speakers, session moderators, and other participants to develop one’s own network

As cognitive decline progresses in individuals with dementia, they eventually become unable to drive safely and are confronted with the need to stop driving. For some, cessation is a painful loss, triggering resistance, anger, and depression. When this occurs, family members may seek guidance on the decision, often from their primary provider. Primary care providers, however, report that this is difficult to do during an office visit and that they are not well prepared. The Fit2Drive predictor is a useful tool for them.

Fit2Drive is an algorithm based on data from cognitive testing and an on-road evaluation of over 400 older drivers. Various combinations of a battery of cognitive tests yielded a combination with a 91% prediction accuracy rate, well within the range required for clinical application. The predictor is available on the Fit2Drive website www.Fit2Drive.org. A tablet-based version is now in development.

Objectives:

1) Discuss the effects of driving cessation on individuals with dementia, their families, friends, and healthcare providers.

2) Explain the use of selected cognitive tests to predict ability to pass an on-road driving evaluation.

3) Describe use of the Fit2Drive predictor.
