University Health was the first hospital in South Texas to focus solely on the health of women and children and marks an advancement in the care of a historically underserved patient population. The design team was charged with creating a hospital of choice for women, children, and babies to serve the region and provide a strong foundation for improving health outcomes and shaping the future for children. The hospital was the first to receive a waiver to the state licensing code to promote couplet care and has since served as a precedent for many hospitals.
