TS 9. Hands-On-Instrumentation Group A

Hands-On Instrumentation Tutorials help experimentalists doing aerosol research to understand the operating principles, full range of capabilities and settings, and assumptions and practical guidelines pertaining to their instrumentation and to the data analysis. Each of the two sessions will be limited to seven vendors and 36 attendees. Bring your questions and notes. During each session, groups of 6 will visit with each instrument for 15 minutes. The purpose of the tutorials is education; this is not a marketing and sales opportunity. The series of small-group interactions emphasizes the fundamental science and design criteria that led to the successful engineering of the instruments. By the end of the tutorial, we hope that the measurements and analysis will be significantly clarified. The goal is for participants to gain an appreciation for instrument design considerations and better understand the instrument’s purpose as well as the range and uncertainties of its measurements. 

Aerosol Devices, a division of Handix Scientific Inc. - BioSpot-GEM

The BioSpot-GEM™ bioaerosol sampler was designed for easy and portable sampling of bioaerosol particles and collects all particles between <10 nm and 10 micron with high efficiency using the proprietary condensation growth capture method. In this tutorial, we will demonstrate how this instrument can be used in field research applications, industrial hygiene uses as well as a companion product for our research grade.

Aerosol Magee Scientific - CASS (AE36s and TCA08)

CASS: The Aerosol Magee Scientific Carbonaceous Aerosol Speciation System CASS , is a combined unit of a Total Carbon Analyzer TCA08 and the Aethalometer providing a revolutionary scientific OC/EC analyzer that measures the Total Carbon Content(TC), the Elemental Carbon content(EC), the Organic Carbon content (OC) and the Black Carbon content (BC) of suspended aerosol particles in near-real Time. AE36S: AE36s creates breakthrough aerosol research. Extended wavelength range offers high-quality data and provides advanced Black Carbon source apportionment and Brown Carbon analysis. AethLabs - microAeth® AL30

The microAeth® AL30 is a pocket-sized, real-time Black Carbon aerosol monitor. It uses proven Aethalometer® technology and features a built-in pump, WiFi, data storage, and an internal battery. Designed for personal use, it measures exposure from various sources, such as cookstoves, wildfires, diesel engine, and transportation emissions.

Brechtel Manufacturing, Inc.  - Portable particle number and mass concentration calibration system

A miniature differential mobility analyzer, condensation particle counter and aerosol generation system will be presented that will generate monodisperse aerosol with a variety of compositions over the 10 to 500 nm diameter range. The monodisperse sample can be used to challenge particle sizers, counters, and other devices to confirm they are working properly. The complete setup is packaged inside a small case with wheels that is smaller than most carry-on size luggage. An overview of the system will be provided as well as an example of its use to verify the operation of another instrument.

Cambustion - Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier – AAC

The Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) is a unique aerosol instrument, capable of classifying particles between 25 nm and > 5,000 nm (PM5) according to their aerodynamic diameter. As the AAC classification principle is independent of particle charge, no charger or neutralizer is required for operation. Moreover, the output is not affected by multiple charging issues or by low charging efficiencies, ensuring that only a single aerodynamic peak is present, and that particle transmission remains high across the entirety of the wide size range. Whilst in the past impactors allowed selection of small particles, and virtual impactors the selection of large particles, only the Cambustion AAC allows the selection of particles in a finite range by aerodynamic particle size.

CH Technologies - CHεST® 

The CH Technologies CHεST® simulates both respiratory exhalation and cough/sneeze events. Prior to operation, the user can set the length of the aerosol generation period and the interval between events. This temporal control as well as the pressure controls allows the parameters of the test condition to be set. During operation, the system actuates a syringe pump to deliver test article solution to the atomizer at programable feed rates. This offers fine aerosol control, as it sets a specified concentration of liquid delivery to the aerosol generator.  As respirable particles are generated they may be measured by the Palas Promo Light-Scattering Spectrometer (Promo System, white light or LED) in order to define the particle size distribution. Use of the Promo System allows real-time particle size and concentration analysis. 

Durag Group - 11-D Dust Decoder and SMPS+C

DURAG’s Grimm 11-D is a handheld laser aerosol spectrometer to determine particle number & size distribution as well as 12 different mass fractions. Our Grimm SMPS+C is a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer with Condensation Particle Counter (Model 5416) for recording particle size distributions from 10-1094 nm.
