TS 13. Hands-On Instrumentation Group B

Hands-On Instrumentation Tutorials help experimentalists doing aerosol research to understand the operating principles, full range of capabilities and settings, and assumptions and practical guidelines pertaining to their instrumentation and to the data analysis. Each of the two sessions will be limited to six vendors and 36 attendees. Bring your questions and notes. During each session, groups of 6 will visit with each instrument for 15 minutes. The purpose of the tutorials is education; this is not a marketing and sales opportunity. The series of small-group interactions emphasizes the fundamental science and design criteria that led to the successful engineering of the instruments. By the end of the tutorial, we hope that the measurements and analysis will be significantly clarified. The goal is for participants to gain an appreciation for instrument design considerations and better understand the instrument’s purpose as well as the range and uncertainties of its measurements.

Access Sensor Technologies - UPAS v2+ and Home Health Box

Engineers from Access Sensor Technologies will demonstrate our Ultrasonic Personal Air Sampler (UPAS) v2+ and Home Health Box (HHB). Both instruments combine size-selective filter samplers with time-resolved sensors for fine particulate matter and gaseous pollutants. The HHB also allows for volatile organic compound sampling. The tutorial will cover device setup, sampling considerations, and how to use our R-based data processing tools to get the most out of your log files.

Palas GmbH - Ultrafine Particle Measurement Instrument U-SMPS

Palas U-SMPS (Universal Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers) have been successfully used worldwide for many years for the precise selection of particle size with simultaneous measurement of the particle concentration of airborne particles in the sub-micron range. They make an essential contribution to research/development as a measuring instrument for determining the efficiency of filter media and elements and in the environmental field for determining the concentration and size of ultrafine particles. Depending on the combination of classifying column (DMA), control unit (DEMC), and particle counter, they cover ranges from a few nanometers to several micrometers. Different combinations are possible depending on the application and customer requirements. The maximum possible resolution is 128 channels/decade. Combined with an optical particle counter, the upper limit can be extended to 40 µm (U-Range System: U-SMPS System + Fidas® System or Promo® System). Palas U-SMPS System can be operated directly with max. two different counters and also accepts third-party products of well-known manufacturers for direct comparison.

Particle Instruments - Dekati MPEC+ with particle number reference generator

We will demonstrate our new particle number reference generator with internal measurement alongside Dekati MPEC+, a particle number counter for vehicle on-board measurement of exhaust, brake- and tire wear PN

Particles Plus, Inc. - Particles Plus 15000-OEM Unveiling the Affordable Water-Based Condensation Particle Counter for Ultrafine Particle Research

This interactive session dives deep into the Particles Plus 15000-OEM, an affordable, water-based condensation particle counter (CPC) designed to empower researchers in aerosol science. Researchers will discover how this cost-effective solution maximizes research potential without breaking the bank and learn about the instrument's reliable performance and low maintenance requirements, ensuring consistent, high-quality data collection. Gain hands-on experience operating the 15000-OEM and unlock the secrets of detecting and analyzing nanoparticles. Explore the principles of condensation particle counting and how it extends detection capabilities to previously unseen realms of ultrafine particles.

Sunset Laboratory - Model 5L OCEC Instrument with 36 Sample Autoloader

The Sunset Laboratory organic carbon-elemental carbon (OC-EC) Aerosol Analyzer thermally desorbs samples from filters under an inert helium atmosphere followed by an oxidizing atmosphere using carefully controlled heating ramps, using a flame ionization detector (FID) to monitor the analysis. The M5L provides high sensitivity with ultra-low carbon background and no oxygen contamination. This tutorial will demonstrate the science behind the sensitive M5L OC-EC measurements.

TSI Incorporated - Detectors: 3068B Aerosol Electrometer, 8587A Laser Photometer, CPC (3750 or 3789)

There are a variety of measurable properties of aerosols, from total number concentration in a given volume of air, to size distribution, particle shape, composition, and beyond. There are likewise many different physical principles that can be examined to characterize the properties of interest of the aerosol for a given application. Examples include how particles scatter light, how they move in an electric field, and how they navigate around obstacles in a flow field. This tutorial will employ several different detector technologies to measure a common aerosol and will illustrate what the strengths and limitations of each technique are based on the measurement principles that they employ. The results will be used to explain why understanding how the detector works is crucial for obtaining a clear picture of the properties or behavior of the aerosol being studied.
