The Iowa Department of Education along with the Iowa State Education Association, and Drake University School of Education are hosting the 12th Annual Emerging Educators Academy.
The Academy is for all first through third year teachers as well as their mentors; and pre-service teacher-prep students. We encourage teams of beginning teachers and mentors to attend together as this event will connect, elevate, and celebrate all participants.
This year’s theme is "Teaching is Better Together.” The Academy will feature breakout sessions on building classroom culture and community, positive learning environments, engagement strategies, and fostering a love of teaching. There are also breakout sessions focusing on ethics, educator wellness, effective a communication strategies, and a panel of award-winning Iowa teachers. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with outstanding Iowa educators.
This year, we are honored to welcome Leon Smith, the 2026 National Teacher of the Year, as our keynote speaker. Leon Smith teaches AP United States History and AP African American Studies at Haverford High School in Pennsylvania, where he is known for inspiring students to think critically, engage civically, and discover their unique voices. With more than two decades of experience as an educator, leader, and mentor, Leon has dedicated his career to helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom. A passionate advocate for meaningful connections in education, Leon believes that students are most successful when they feel seen, valued, and supported. Inspired by his mother to become a teacher at a young age, he has spent his career encouraging students to believe in themselves and recognize their potential. Leon’s impact extends far beyond academic achievement. Colleagues, students, and families consistently praise his ability to create welcoming, empowering learning environments where every student can flourish. As one student described him, “He is a once-in-a-lifetime great teacher.” We are thrilled to have Leon share his insights, experiences, and vision for education with us this year.
