The Ethnic Minority Emerging Leaders Training (EMELT) is a member-led, IEA leadership development program created to identify, train, and support ethnic minority and all emerging leaders throughout the Illinois Education Association. The program focuses on IEA structure and governance, leadership development, member organizing, and helping participants create a personal leadership plan that prepares them to serve their locals, regions, state affiliate, and the National Education Association.
Originally known as Minority Leadership Training (MLT), EMELT was founded by former IEA President Al Llorens and hosted its first training in 2013. However, the foundation of EMELT is rooted in a much deeper history of equity, representation, and leadership within our union.
In 1966, the American Teachers Association (ATA) merged with the National Education Association (NEA). The ATA represented Black educators and other educators of color during an era when many schools and professional organizations remained segregated. As the two organizations united, leaders recognized the importance of ensuring that ethnic minority educators continued to have meaningful opportunities to shape the future of the association. This commitment led to the creation of NEA Bylaw 3-1(g).
Since the 1970s, NEA Bylaw 3-1(g) has required every state affiliate to develop and implement action plans that promote meaningful ethnic minority participation in organizational leadership. This commitment continues to strengthen the association by ensuring that leadership reflects the diversity of the members and communities it serves.
Since its creation, EMELT has prepared hundreds of IEA members, as well as members from other NEA state affiliates to become leaders at the local, state, and national levels. As a member-led, staff-supported program, EMELT continues to grow each year, developing leaders who organize, advocate, and build stronger, more inclusive unions.
Today, EMELT remains a cornerstone of the Illinois Education Association's commitment to cultivating diverse leadership. By investing in emerging leaders, honoring the vision of Al Lorens, and empowering members to organize their communities, EMELT helps ensure that our union continues to reflect the voices of all educators while advancing excellence and equity for every student.
