Welcome to the Communicable Disease Population Public Health (CDPPH) Community Health Nurse Continuing Education Workshop November 2026

During this workshop, participants will choose from four education streams.
Each stream has limited capacity, so please select the one that best aligns with your learning needs and community context. Mandatory prerequisites must be completed prior to registration approval, and manager approval is required for attendance.

OPTION 1 -  COMMUNICABLE DISEASE/ TB FOUNDATIONS:

DAY 1 - Communicable Disease

Overview:

Communicable Disease Control is a mandatory core program for First Nations Communities across BC. This stream includes one day focused on general communicable disease (CD) concepts.

Key Learnings:

• Applying CD concepts in community
• Case studies & group discussions

DAY 2 & 3 - Tuberculosis Foundation

Overview: 

Tuberculosis (TB) is a mandatory core public health program for First Nations Communities across British Columbia. This workshop will include two days of TB content which will enhance nursing knowledge around TB screening and programming.

Key Learnings: 

· Navigating the BCCDC TB Manual and various TB resources

· Essentials of TB programming in First Nations communities through the lens of cultural safety

· Interactive TB scenarios with opportunities for practice and group discussion

· Incorporating TB programming into daily nursing work with an emphasis on higher risk targeted screening, prevention and preparedness

 Audience:

LPNs and RNs working in First Nations communities, new or experienced in CD & Community Health Nurses (LPN's and RN's) who provide TB Programming within their current health service setting.

OPTION 2 - COMMUNICABLE DISEASE/ STI CERTIFIED PRACTICE

DAY 1 - Communicable Disease Workshop

DAY 2 & 3 - STI Certified Practice: From Practice to Program Implementation

Overview:

This 2 day workshop provides an opportunity for STI-certified nurses to review and strengthen their skills in culturally safe STI assessment, testing, treatment, and follow-up using a person-led approach. Active learning stations focused on phlebotomy, pelvic examinations, and lab supplies provide opportunities to enhance clinical practice. The workshop will also focus on developing and maintaining sexual health services in community with opportunities to apply concepts to participants’ own practice settings. 

Key Learnings: 

· With a trauma-informed and culturally safe approach, demonstrate ability to collect subjective and objective sexual health assessment history

· Create and evaluate person-led care plans for STI testing, treatment, and follow up by applying current evidence-based DST's

· Demonstrate foundational skills in venipuncture, pelvic examination, and preparation of STI testing supplies

· Examine methods to develop and maintain a Sexual Health Service in community

 Audience:

STI Certified Nurses.

OPTION 3 - INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL/ IMMS101: FOUNDATIONS OF IMMUNIZATION

DAY 1 - Infection Prevention & Control

Overview:

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is a core part of community health nursing in First Nations communities. This workshop strengthens IPC practices by exploring infection prevention concepts and skills and how they can be woven into everyday relational care. This stream includes one day focused on general IPC concepts.

Key Learnings:

· Applying foundational IPC principles in community nursing practice

· Selecting and using advanced personal Protective equipment (PPE)

· Integrating culturally safe approaches into IPC practice

· Exploring the role of nurses in communicable disease emergency (CDE)  preparedness

DAY 2 & 3 - Immunization 101: Foundations of Immunization

Overview:

Immunization, as part of Communicable Disease Control (CDC), is a mandatory core program for First Nations Communities across British Columbia.  This stream is designed for nurses who are new to autonomous immunization practice in First Nations Communities across BC.  

Key Learnings:

· Navigating the BCCDC Immunization Manual 

· Planning vaccine schedules

· Identifying potential reactions and appropriate responses

· Communicating vaccine information through the lens of cultural safety

Audience:

This workshop is designed for new and experienced LPNs and RNs working in First Nations communities who are building or strengthening their knowledge, skills, and confidence in infection prevention and control and immunization practice.

OPTION 4 - MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH - Supporting Families from the Prenatal Period to Early Childhood (age 6) (*All 3 Days)

Overview:

This workshop will provide information and will support you to develop practical skills related to prenatal assessment and education, intimate partner violence, CPT1A variant, newborn jaundice, perinatal anxiety and depression, and the assessment of babies and young children. Designed as a three-day learning experience, it will benefit nurses at all stages of their careers, from those who are new-to-practice to those with extensive clinical experience.

Key Learnings:

Weaving cultural safety, trauma informed practice, and relational practice into all topics, learners will acquire skills and knowledge in: 

· Assessment and support for people who are pregnant. 

· Assessment of growth and development for infants to age 6. 

· Identification and assessment of specific conditions such as jaundice, CPT1A variant, and perinatal anxiety and depression. 

· Assessment and support for families and individuals experiencing intimate partner violence. 

· Engaging in challenging conversations regarding IPV, depression and other situations.  

Audience:

Community health nurses (RNs, LPNs, and NPs) providing support to life givers, families, children, and community members in FNHA and FNHSO health centers and nursing stations, as well as primary care nurses supporting families through primary care clinics. There will be discussion groups and breakout sessions tailored to different levels of nursing experience.
