Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Instructor Course

NRP Instructor Course Registration Information:

This two-day in person NRP Instructor Course prepares instructor candidates to teach, coach, and assess learners in neonatal resuscitation using the 9th edition framework. Participants will explore adult learning principles and the content of the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) NRP Provider course, including Performance Skills Stations, Integrated Skills Stations, and Assessment (ISSA) and debriefing scenarios. Through guided practice, return demonstrations, simulation, debriefing, peer feedback, and reflective discussion, candidates will strengthen the knowledge and teaching skills needed to deliver learner-centered, evidence-based NRP education in their local context. The workshop also addresses the roles and responsibilities of Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) NRP Instructors, and the practical considerations involved in delivering a CPS NRP Provider course.

Learning Outcomes: 

• Apply adult learning principles and instructional strategies to facilitate effective learning. 
• Develop clinical scenarios and deliver constructive evaluation and feedback to learners.
• Demonstrate understanding of the principles of simulation-based learning and effective debriefing. 
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) NRP instructor. 

Eligibility for this course:  

• Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, or respiratory therapists are eligible to apply. 
• Paramedics and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) can become instructors provided they have been approved individually and in writing by their provincial/regional NRP Committee. Other health professionals approved by their provincial/regional committee or equivalent may also be eligible to apply. 
• Applicants must have been an NRP provider for a minimum of 2 years. 
• Applicants must have relevant and ongoing experience in neonatal resuscitation. 
• Applicants must be affiliated with health institutions that support neonatal resuscitation programming 

Application / Prerequisites for the course include:

1. Proof of current CPS NRP Provider status with successful completion of Lessons 1-11 AND an Advanced ISSA (copy of NRP Provider card within 12 months of applying for the NRP Instructor Course) 
2. Certificate of completion of the 9th edition Advanced Online Learning Assessmet (OLA) 
3. (Copy of) Proof of Licensure from licensing body (MD, RN, RT, MW) 
4.  One letter of reference. Letter of reference should speak to your qualifications for becoming an instructor along with your clinical experience related to newborn care and resuscitation), 
5. Letter of Support (Download Letter Template) from candidate’s manager at their sponsoring facility/organization, and  
6. Candidate Letter of Intent: 
   Please write a 250-to-500-word count document introducing yourself and be sure to include the following:  
      a. why you want to become an NRP Instructor,
      b. your current role and at least 2 years of relevant clinical experience  
      c. your current and relevant teaching experience and
      d. your vision of your role as an NRP Instructor. 

Please Note: All the required pre-requisites listed above, must be uploaded within one week of applying for the course. Pending registration will be denied if pre-requisites are NOT uploaded within 7 days.

Course Material Information: 

The 9th edition of the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation (2025) should be reviewed before the workshop, and participants are required to bring the textbook to the course.  Pre-work will be assigned once accepted into the workshop.     

Please note:  9th Edition NRP textbook is NOT included in the course fee.
 

The NRP Instructor Course covers a lot of material in a short time. Please open and review all the materials listed above prior to the course.

Attendance Guidelines

• Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to the start time. 
• Attendance for the full duration of both days is mandatory. 
• Due to the volume of material this session covers, we will not be able to accept late arrivals. 
• Late arrivals and those not participating for the full duration each day will be asked to reschedule at their own expense. 
• Please wear comfortable clothes and approprate closed toe footwear.
