High-resolution Reanalysis Data for AI weather and S2S Modeling and Applications

The development of the next generation of AI foundation models for weather critically depends on high spatial- and temporal-resolution reanalysis training datasets. In addition, a modern, multi-decadal, high-resolution reanalysis will benefit physics-based model and application development and implementation with potential use spanning research to operations across public and private sectors.

The High-resolution Reanalysis Data Workshop will bring together approximately 50 experts from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. DOE national laboratories, universities, and federal agencies to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and advance the development of high-resolution reanalysis datasets that would elevate the U.S. as the leading developer of AI foundation models for weather and S2S scales. This workshop, held at Argonne National Laboratory on September 22-23, 2026, is hosted jointly by NOAA and Argonne.

Over two days, workshop participants will discuss the use of rapidly growing observational datasets and the challenges of using them to improve AI and physics-based model development and end-user applications in various sectors of the economy (energy, water, agriculture etc.). Participants will consider the development of a new generation of high-resolution reanalysis datasets, chart a path forward for a series of potential reanalysis datasets at increasingly finer resolution, identify observational and computational resource requirements, and evaluate traditional NWS and AI models for developing these datasets. In addition, the use of artificial intelligence and specifically machine learning algorithms that potentially can be employed to accelerate the development of these reanalyses will be discussed.

This workshop, which will include focused small breakout sessions, is by invitation only. A draft agenda is below for travel planning purposes, with a detailed agenda forthcoming.
