Course Description:

This is a recording of the live 2-day course where Speech Language Pathologists will learn about concussion, brain injury and how you can best support your patient’s healing process. Learn tools, strategies and functional interventions to help with improving brain function and helping patients return to work, learning and meaningful activities.

This course will also provide a comprehensive overview of what you need to know as a clinician about cognition including executive function and how you can treat and support other populations who require assessment and treatment in these areas.

This course will also include factors to be mindful of when you are working with individuals who are involved in litigation, appropriate documentation, and your role as a clinician in this process.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

1. Define concussion and how it changes the brain

2. Teach patients strategies to support the healing process

3. Understand factors that influence a concussion/TBI recovery and overall cognition/executive function, how to address those and when to refer to others

4. Identify other providers and clinicians critical for best concussion/TBI care and their role in the healing process

5. Describe most current research and best practice for concussion, TBI, cognition and executive function

6. Debunk common myths surrounding concussion, TBI, cognition and executive function

7. Perform a thorough, comprehensive evaluation for patients with cognitive deficits.

8. Explain the rationale behind treatment recommendations and be able to clearly/concisely teach this information to a patient

9. Describe treatment approaches, tools and strategies to address common challenges that arise

10. Understand factors to be mindful of in cases of litigation, and how to make sure you are completing appropriate documentation

11. Understand moderate and severe traumatic brain injury and how to provide most appropriate evaluation and intervention

12. Demonstrate confidence in providing evaluation, intervention and education for other populations for cognition and executive functioning: dementia, CVA, ADHD, dyslexia, and more.
