Livestock Fecal Egg Counting
FECAL SAMPLE COLLECTING INSTRUCTIONS
Bringing a Sample to the Workshop
Participants are welcome to collect and bring a fecal sample from their own animals for analysis during the workshop. Please note: samples must be fresh at the time of collection.
To collect a sample:
- Put on a clean glove and apply a small amount of lubricant or water to your index and middle fingers.
- Gently insert your fingers into the rectum of the animal and spread them apart to stimulate defecation. This should stimulate the animal to pass manure into your hand.
- Collect at least one tablespoon of manure directly into your gloved hand.
- Remove the glove by turning it inside out, keeping the manure sample contained.
- Squeeze out excess air and tie the glove securely with a wire tie.
- Label the sample clearly using a permanent marker.
- Store the sample in a refrigerator or in a cooler with ice to keep it cold.
Alternatively, you may collect a sample immediately after the animal naturally passes feces. The manure should still be warm at the time of collection.
All samples should be collected within 24 hours of the workshop.
