Background and Mission

The US electricity transmission sector is entering a new era, marked by extraordinary growth in electricity demand. Artificial Intelligence (AI), data centers, and transportation and industrial electrification, are driving significant load increases across the country. To meet this moment, the US must expand and modernize its transmission network, a priority reinforced by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Speed to Power initiative to accelerate critical grid infrastructure.  

The development of new generation facilities is accelerating, creating an urgent need for transmission capacity that can integrate diverse resources, move power across regions, and maintain system stability. Interconnection queues are swelling, siting and permitting delays persist, and regional planning processes are straining under the scale and pace of change. The grid, much of which was designed decades ago, is now under mounting pressure to deliver more power – more quickly and more reliably. Without swift and coordinated action to upgrade and expand transmission infrastructure, the US risks falling behind in both economic competitiveness and energy security.  

In this context, Global Transmission Report is hosting its 6th Annual Transmission Infrastructure US conference on June 9–10, 2026, at Jay Conference Center, Midtown East, New York. This year’s event will discuss the challenges and opportunities of building a grid capable of meeting surging demand, integrating vast new generation, and achieving national energy ambitions, while ensuring reliability, affordability, and resilience.  

The conference will bring together leaders from federal and state agencies, utilities, RTOs/ISOs, developers, investors, community organizations, and technology innovators to discuss the actions required to prepare the grid for the immediate future and the decades ahead. The event will focus on:  

  • How utilities, RTOs/ISOs, and policymakers are preparing for unprecedented load growth driven by AI, data centers, electrification, and industrial expansion
  • Federal, state, and regional strategies, including DOE’s Speed to Power initiative, for accelerating transmission buildout
  • Emerging technologies, from advanced conductors and HVDC systems to AI-enabled planning tools, that can unlock near-term and long-term grid capacity
  • Best practices for managing siting, permitting, interconnection, and regulatory challenges to expedite transmission development
